Blog Visitors Over For Dinner

One of the first quests bloggers have, is trying to GET and KEEP blog visitors on their site, but this really is only half of the battle.  Once you get your blogger visitors,  at your house for dinner.  How long is it before the say they have to leave? 1 minute, 2 minutes, 10…..?

Perhaps you don’t know how to measure this?  Well it is really important that you do measure your blog visitors and the length of time they stay on your site.  In a future post I will show you how to install Google Analytics and take notice of your bounce rate.  Your bounce rate is the amount of time a person stays on your site before they decide this isn’t for them and off they go…..SEE YA!

The trick for a blogger is to keep your blog visitors as engaged as possible…to get them to stick around, to read more of your content, to opt on to your list and to really get to know you.  I could write lots about what you should be doing to keep people on your blog.  But what I thought might be easier is to tell you what you really shouldn’t be doing and how this could be seriously affecting the number of blog visitors you get staying on your site.

Being Argumentative/Controversial with your Blog Visitors

Now this is a fine balance, because with the right timing and the right debate, being controversial is not always a bad thing to keep people on your site.  However, think long and hard about who you are targeting in the long run.  Are you targeting Mr and Mrs Angry Pants?  Do you want to alienate your usual blog visitors for the sake of one blog post?  Really think about this before getting all angry, especially if you are in the online marketing and home based business world which brings me onto…

Whining and Opportunity Bashing to your Blog Visitors

This has to be my biggest pet hate.  I have been on a few blogs recently where the authors are getting a reputation for just outright whinging.  Don’t get me wrong you can eloquently write a review about an opportunity explaining why something wasn’t for you and that’s cool.  Sometimes it’s good  to be honest with your readers as to why something wasn’t a good fit.

….But bashing a company for the sake of it because YOU didn’t make it work, can look very silly indeed.   More importantly you will attract more negative opportunity bashing people into your life!  Don’t ask me how it works, it just does and you will repel the positive ones, which if you are trying to build a business you really DO need.

Sales Pitchy Every Time

We all want to make money, but we have to be selective about when and where and how much WE create sales pitch posts.  Remember you can create quality content in your niche, offer value and then have a subtle call to action at the end of your post; you can encourage people to opt on your list and then pitch to them when they have come to KNOW, LIKE and TRUST you.  But if EVERY post you write is ‘buy my stuff‘, you’ll get a reputation about only being interested in the CASH and not the CONNECTION.

Comment Captchas and Comment Luv

This might surprise you… when I find blog post, i’m interested in reading.  The first thing I do,  is scroll all the way down to the bottom of the post to see what the comment set up is like.  If it is Commentluv you will get my comment, so long as it’s good content almost every time.

If I have to do a headstand, answer a math question and log in to some other comment platform before I can leave a comment, well then, unfortunately, unless you have super stellar content I will be on my merry way.

This might seem really harsh, but this is just a reality and it serves as a big wake up call to making it as easy as possible for people to interact on your blog.  Comment Luv is free and the Commentluv Premium version has some great features that all bloggers need.

In an earlier post I wrote about how to be the worst blogger you can be, you will find some more pet peeves, like pop-ups, blog design and more.

What do you do to keep people on your site?  Perhaps you use Linkwithin or some other plugin.  Or maybe you reward your readers with Commentluv.  Let me know below.
